AUTHOR INTERVIEW: Catherine Ryan Howard
Catherine Ryan Howard is a Twitter success story. Not only did she use social media to promote her first book, Mousetrapped, a memoir about her 18 months working for Disney (which I reviewed here) but it’s how she met her agent. And (surely the most exciting thing) it’s how she met me. Here Catherine (right) talks about all things memoir, and a couple of novel things… ...

– Memoir reveals prisoners’ book preferences This sounds like an interesting book. I haven’t read it, but Erwin James is quoted in the piece, and his first prison memoir, A Life Inside, is wonderful.

My Fair Lazy Giveaway!
I decided to give away my copy of Jen Lancaster’s My Fair Lazy to one of my lovely readers (I’m posting it myself, so I’m afraid it’s UK-only). All you have to do is leave a comment or send me an email letting me know your favourite memoir, and I’ll pick a winner at random using one of those online random number-picker things (sorry to blow your mind with jargon,...

– GalleyCat I guess the prize would be worth having for a big fan, and it’s definitely a different way to promote a memoir, but I certainly couldn’t be bothered to chase around town searching for Jay-Z’s words of wisdom. If it was Beyonce, that would be a different matter.

AUTHOR INTERVIEW: Shauna Reid
The fact that I haven’t yet reviewed Shauna Reid’s The Amazing Adventures of Dietgirl shouldn’t be taken to mean that I didn’t read and love it, because I did, and I do. While some weight loss stories never really touch on the important stuff — like the feelings underneath over-eating — Shauna faces the truth about herself and her (for want of a better word) issues whilst...

Memoirist of the Future: Lena Chen
Confession: when I hear the words “sex blogger”, I cringe a little. I’ve never bought into that whole “having loads of sex for the sake of it is super-feminist” myth. But while Lena Chen became famous for her blog The Sex and the Ivy (about her sex life at Harvard) she doesn’t subscribe to the idea that having sex with a lot of people is in itself feminist....

It's Tina Fey's Book, "Bossypants"! →
I’m not one of those Tina Fey fangirls who think everything she does is wonderful, but I do think she’s interesting, clever, and talented, and I’ll definitely want to read her new memoir/essay collection. Which this may or may not be the cover for, creepy man hands and all. Will you be buying?

Memoir Armoire recommends... The Omnivore
Here’s a site that gathers together what reviewers have said about books, film and theatre. The non-fiction section of the site is jam-packed, and includes recent memoirs like Sarah Silverman’s The Bedwetter. (Critical consensus: three stars out of five.) What an excellent idea.

REVIEWS POLICY (Yes, I have one!)
The majority of the books I review are bought with my own money or borrowed from the library. Others are kindly sent to me by publishers. Regardless of where a book is from, I always give my honest opinion. Of course, I am predisposed to like the books I get from publishers, not because they are free but because I only request books I think I will enjoy. In the interests of full disclosure,...

Jaycee Dugard, who survived being kidnapped at age 11 and held captive for 18 years, is writing a memoir. Dugard’s book is scheduled to come out next year, Simon & Schuster announced Monday. Financial terms were not disclosed. According to the publisher, the 30-year-old Dugard will write the currently untitled book herself and cover her life from her abduction in 1991 to how she is doing...

AUTHOR INTERVIEW: Koren Zailckas
I’m delighted that Koren Zailckas agreed to sit down with me… (OK, sit down and email with me) for the launch of Memoir Armoire’s first (but not last!) author interview, in honour of her new book, Fury. In keeping with the bite-sized news and reviews theme, it’s short and sweet, but contains some great advice. Enjoy! We’re all about keeping things short and sweet...

Women Writers That Inspire Me →
A list from Skirt! featuring one of my faves, Catherine Gildiner, who, incidentally has a new book out later this year (which I believe is a re-release of an out-of-print title), the sequel to Too Close to the Falls, called (of course) After the Falls.

Interesting/insightful review of Meghan McCain’s “Dirty Sexy Politics” — which is apparently a “YA memoir” aimed at a younger demographic. To make her seem wise? (Yes, saucer of milk for one over here.)

Memoirist of the future: Jamie Varon
Welcome to a new Memoir Armoire feature where I’ll highlight some of the best writers who will one day be publishing their life stories, at least if they (and I) have anything to do with it. I discovered Jamie Varon via Jenny Lawson aka The Bloggess, as Jamie is the design half of Shatterboxx who make fine-looking websites like Jenny’s. Jamie has her own blog, A Life in...

– Eat, Pray, Love, Get Judged? It’s one of the most-read memoirs ever, so of course I had to write about it at some point… In this post (on my Wordpress blog) I call Elizabeth Gilbert’s critics “cynical, emotionally stunted sexists”. Which ought to cover it.
