I Don’t Care about your Band bought by HBO

HBO is teaming with Will Ferrell and Adam McKay’s Gary Sanchez and actress Lizzy Caplan to develop a comedy series project based on actress/writer Julie Klausner’s memoir I Don’t Care About Your Band. The project is eyed as a potential starring vehicle for Caplan, who is coming off Starz’s cult comedy series Party Down.

Even though I can never quite nail the spelling of her surname (memo to self: not K!) I am a huge Caplan fan and am willing her to have a hit. Klausner’s book has had a real mix of reviews, so it’s one I’m clearly going to have to read and make up my own mind about, but she makes me laugh on Twitter and I like her pop cultural writings, so fingers crossed this will be a good match.

For seven years, Alison Arngrim played a wretched, scheming, selfish, lying, manipulative brat on one of TV history’s most beloved series. Though millions of Little House on the Prairie viewers hated Nellie Oleson and her evil antics, Arngrim grew to love her character — and the freedom and confidence Nellie inspired in her. In Confessions of a Prairie Bitch, Arngrim describes growing up in Hollywood with her eccentric parents… [and] she also bravely recounts her life’s challenges.

Look, mum!
When other girls her age were experiencing their first crushes, Melissa Sue Anderson was receiving handwritten marriage proposals from fans as young, and younger, than she was. When other girls were dreaming of their first kiss, Melissa was struggling through hers in front of a camera. From age eleven in 1974 until she left the show in 1981, Melissa Anderson literally grew up before the viewers of Little House on the Prairie.

If you’re not a fan of loud American redheads who swear a lot, this might not be the book for you… but comedian and My Life on the D List star Griffin does more than an extended comedy routine in this cleverly-named memoir. She covers her early years as a struggling actor, her brother’s drug addiction (and his other serious issues), the suicide of her good friend and her father’s death as well as dishing on some famous names (Andre Agassi: apparently not so fun). A fun and satisfying read, and the book club questions at the back are priceless.
